50's Amber Glass Cocktail Ring
What can I say: I remember, like it was yesterday, being totally enthralled as I watched my grandmother getting ready to go out for the evening. This mystifying sequence of events always included carefully selecting just the right jewelry to compliment her evening dress. Dazzling jewels, in an array of brilliant colors, were gingerly placed on her hands, neck and ears. Naturally, each piece had a story behind it...this one was a gift from grandfather on our 25 anniversary, another piece was a gift from grandfather when he came home late from the casinos...on and on they went. This huge 50's cocktail ring is a perfect example of the lavish style rings so popular back then. The bigger the better it seemed. This particular ring features a large rich amber colored faceted glass center stone, set atop a row of individually set/pronged square cut glass stones of the same amber hue. The band that circles the finger is engraved with a delicate floral motif. The piece has been reinforced on the underside with what appears to be silver or a silver colored metal, to strengthen and secure the band to the top of the ring. I can't be sure if the metal used is brass or something similar but the color is a rich coppery-brass. the ring is in Mint condition and only shows minor age related surface dulling to the finger band. I haven't cleaned this piece, preferring the aged patina of the burnished copper color that it currently possesses.
